OCEAN FACTS
The Ocean Is
Suffocating in Plastic
The ocean covers more than 70% of the planet's surface and is our most important ecosystem.
Every second breath we take.
Every second meal we eat.
We depend on the Ocean.
The ocean is the very foundation of our survival and our planet’s life support system. But it’s in danger. We need to act. Now.
OCEAN FACTS
Global Plastic Production
In 2016 alone, we produced 396 million metric tons of plastic – that’s 53 kilograms of plastic for every person on the planet. If our plastic addiction continues to increase at its current rate, global production could increase by 40% by 2030.
Global plastic production has exploded in the last 20 years.
OCEAN FACTS
A Threat to Us All
Once the plastic is in the sea, it is damaging to wildlife. Each year, entanglement and digestion kill millions of seals, whales, turtles, birds, and other species. When the plastic isn’t collected from the ocean, it breaks up into microplastics, which are now being found in fish and our drinking water. A disaster for the health of animals and humans both now and for future generations.
